10 Common Mistakes Writers Make About the Law

Join Leslie Budewitz for an informative and enteratining presentation about the law!

A legal thread runs through the fictional world, especially for mystery and crime writers. But the law is complex. It varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and sometimes changes. And too many people, including writers, are TV-educated, unaware that the terminology used in New York on Law & Order does not apply to a story set in Virginia or Montana. Taught by a lawyer with 40 years of experience who is also an award-winning mystery writer, this workshop will address 10 common mistakes fiction writers make about the law and provide some simple research tools for getting the facts about the law right.

Leslie Budewitz writes cozy mysteries, suspense, and historical fiction set in the Northwest. A not-quite-retired lawyer, a graduate of Notre Dame Law School, and a member of the Washington and Montana bars, Leslie is the author of Books, Crooks and Counselors: How to Write Accurately About Criminal Law and Courtroom Procedure, winner of the 2011 Agatha Award for Best Nonfiction. A former president of Sisters in Crime, Leslie lives in NW Montana.
